An Elegy on Iraq

Broken bridges, tattered buildings, shattered homes and desolate individuals with none to give solace,

A country which once boasted of rich culture and tradition is in shambles.

Here and there a pregnant woman giving birth to a child,

With none to sing paeans of praise for the newborn,

Human entry and exit from the world going unnoticed.

With the overwhelming advance of combat forces, an overwhelming number of derelicts.

Near and dear ones killed in crossfire strewn on the roads,

Many crumbling unable to match the superior firepower of the forces,

Many volunteering to die as fidayeens,

The rivalry and faction killings day in and day out,

Widespread destruction to human property and humans,

Hospitals flooded with the injured – broken limbs and broken hearts,

And the insurgency continuing unabated day and night assuming monstrous proportions,

With the casualty figures mounting with each passing day

portending ominous signs for this once hallowed country.

What is the future of this country?

May God’s Will prevail!

P.S: To be engraved as an epitaph on the tombs of the dead.
